Two Door Cinema Club

^^

When: Thursday 28th November
Where:
Enmore Theatre

Secret Sounds Present TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB 2019 AUSTRALIAN TOUR. First an indie sensation, then a stadium-slaying juggernaut, now experts in the subtle art of pop seduction, Irish heroes Two Door Cinema Club are celebrating the fevered reception to their just-dropped fourth record False Alarm with a string of unmissable appointments across Australia in November. Described by Clash as “a game-changing record for the future of indie-rock”, False Alarm was released on June 21 and signals another chapter in the impressive re-birth of a band adored for their kinetic post-punk energy, world-weary lyricisms and recent forays into Kraftwerk-esque stylized synth-pop. Led by the unmistakably sonorous vocals of Alex Trimble and backed with vigorous ease by Sam Halliday (bass) and Kevin Baird (drums), Two Door Cinema Club have been much- loved since they burst onto the landscape in 2009 with the release of their debut Tourist History. Tracks from that record such as ‘Undercover Martyn’ and ‘What You Know’ were adopted as anthems of a nascent movement of UK based guitar acts catapulting themselves onto the worlds stage. Bands like The Wombats and The Maccabees also lived inside this orbit and in the late-naughties, early-aughts it became impossible to escape the kind of razor-sharp songcraft that Trimble and his cohorts were unleashing.

In 2018, Ziggy released his fifth record ‘Laps Around The Sun’ which was premiered on Billboard Magazine and was ‘Feature Album of the Week’ on triple j. The Vanns

^^

When: Saturday 7th December
Where:
Metro Theatre

Since their inception at a local Wollongong band competition in 2013, The VANNS have been crafting music that not only stirs up a melting pot of indie and alt-rock influences, but delivers a fresh, modern sound that has seen them fast become one of the most in demand young bands on the east coast of Australia, spending the last 24 months opening for the likes of Catfish and The Bottlemen, Ocean Alley and Hippo Campus, as well as securing festival slots at Yours & Owls, Party in the Paddock and The Big Pineapple Festival. "Working with Oscar was like having an older brother in the band; a fifth member who related so well with us lads, the songs and how we wanted to record them." - Jimmy Vann. Add to that their fast-growing certification as a headliner, stepping up at the start of 2019 to sell out two shows at Melbourne’s Wrangler Studios, and the 750 capacity Factory Theatre in NSW; each event displaying the magnetism the band have with their following. Their new single 'Mother' manifests The VANNS’ thriving, bold, creative dynamic. Having received a final spit and polish from Mixer Chris Collins (Gang Of Youths/Middle Kids), the track lays ground for the arrival of the band’s debut album in late 2019. "If the album has any kind of overarching, spinal theme running through it; it’s Jim and I coming together and writing about similar experiences we’ve gone through. It’s a relationship record and it’s a breakup record; and it’s about being in your early/mid twenties and trying to understand and navigate through both of those things."" - Cameron Little.

Wafia

^^

When: Saturday 25th January
Where: Metro
Theatre

Hailed by VOGUE as "the 24-year-old, Muslim, Iraqi-Syrian, queer artist that is single handedly shaking up the music industry with her 'purposeful pop,'" Wafia has made waves for magnifying identifiable and idiosyncratic experiences in the form of alternative electro anthems rich with keen observation and lyrical power. She first arrived with an initial series of independent releases and collaborations but truly captured the world's attention with her featured role on Louis the Child's 2018 smash, "Better Not (Feat. Wafia)". The track earned worldwide streams in excess of 200 million along with a RIAA Gold certification and widespread acclaim from the likes of W, Idolator, Ladygunn, NPR, Wonderland, i-D, and more. Now based in Los Angeles after growing up in Australia, Wafia quickly followed up with her own "I'm Good," drawing millions of worldwide streams as well as further applause from The FADER, which wrote, "Produced by John Hill and co-written with Wrabel, ('I'm Good' is) built around a pulsing beat and shimmery instrumentation that, together, sound like a moment of self-confident clarity." "I'm Good" is "a perfect song," declared Refinery 29. "The groove…is truly second to none, and paired with (Wafia's) airy vocals, it makes for a next-level conception on a classic genre of song." With over 300 million worldwide streams to her name thus far, Wafia is keenly aware of her position in life and is committed to empowering marginalized communities, at home and abroad, while also helping women of all shapes, sizes, and nationalities find themselves in her music. Though her unique art is distinctly personal, Wafia firmly believes creative gifts are meant to be shared and is passionately determined to create a positive environment that says all are welcome here. Wafia – who is currently hard at work recording her long-awaited EP, due next year – will join Electric Guest on select dates of the first leg of their upcoming KIN World Tour, beginning October 28th at Seattle, WA's Showbox and then continuing into November.

X Ambassadors

^^

When: Thursday 6th February
Where: Metro
Theatre

A powerful and anthemic musical experience delivered with awe inspiring precision, American rock stalwarts X Ambassadors celebrate the release of their much awaited second studio album Orion by locking in four huge dates in Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Coming nearly five years after the success of their much-loved debut album VHS, this latest LP demonstrates a band at the peak of their powers – something that audiences on this side of the world will behold for the first time as the band play their debut Antipodean shows in February 2020. Formed by brothers Sam and Casey Harris in 2009, X Ambassadors have proved a durable and exciting force in American music over the last decade. They’ve seen three of their tunes hit the US top 20 through high-profile placements in commercials (‘Renegades’, which featured in the 2015 Jeep Renegade campaign), films (2016’s ‘Sucker for Pain’ from Suicide Squad) and trailers (‘Unsteady’ from the 2016 drama Me Before You). Sam has also proven to be something of a gun for hire as a songwriter, working recently as the co-writer on seven tracks from For the Throne: Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones, as well as spending time in the studio with red-hot force of nature Lizzo. It comes as no surprise then, that X Ambassadors’ tracks are typically perfectly constructed pieces of emotional dynamite. Singles such as ‘Jungle’, ‘Unsteady’ and this years’ ‘Boom’ utilise the full force of Sam’s vocal talents while leaning heavily on the keyboard mastery of his brother Casey. In fact, one of the most affecting moments of an X Ambassadors live show arrives when Casey (blind from birth) takes centre stage and delivers an emotive solo interlude. A stark contrast to the often crunching beats usually delivered by the three-piece, it goes a long way to demonstrating the versatile nature of their music. “You work for the fans. That’s it," Harris has said. "Obviously the music has to come from a personal place, but at the end of the day, these fans are the ones that are doing everything for you.” For the first time in February 2020 at these huge shows, fans from Australia and New Zealand will be given the opportunity to watch on as X Ambassadors deliver a high energy experience filled with soaring vocals and perfectly structured instrumentation.

TONY HADLEY, former lead singer from one the biggest bands of the 1980s, Spandau Ballet has announced he will return to Australia in February /March 2020 for a solo tour with his full band that will see him perform Spandau Ballet’s biggest hits and new material from his new album TALKING TO THE MOON. “I am thrilled to be returning to Australia for the first time in five years with my band, The Fabulous TH band who are not only amazing musicians but great friends too. The first time I ever toured Australia was back in the mid-80’s with my old band Spandau Ballet and I have to say it was an amazing experience. In fact every time I’ve toured Oz since, even as a solo artist, the experience has been equally fantastic. A question often asked by journalists is do I, and can I, sing the classic hits of Spandau Ballet, such as True, Gold, Through the Barricades, Round and Round, and the answer is a resounding yes; I still love singing these songs. Along with these classic hits and others, I’ll be performing songs from my new Album, Talking to the Moon as well as some favourite songs by other artists. Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you next February 2020.”

Natalie Mering, aka Weyes Blood, is a bundle of contradictions, a spirit of balance. Tim Minchin

When: Tuesday 17th March - Saturday 21st March
Where:
Enmore Theatre

After selling out his national tour in record breaking time and receiving rave audience reviews across the country earlier this year, internationally renowned, award-winning musician, comedian, actor, writer and composer, TIM MINCHIN is coming back…back-to-back, with BACK in 2020. BACK was Tim’s first Australian tour since returning to the country after almost a decade of living overseas and was seen by almost 69,000 Australians after a seven year absence from the stage. The long-awaited tour also saw him pick up a prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Australian Contemporary Concert. BACK is billed as “Old Songs, New Songs, F*** You Songs”, hinting at a set list of material from all corners of Minchin’s eclectic – and often iconoclastic – repertoire. Minchin has been celebrated globally for writing the music and lyrics for “Matilda the Musical”, which has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed musicals of the last 20 years, winning a record 7 Olivier Awards, 13 Helpmann Awards and 5 Tony Awards. It continues to run in the West End and has already played in over 50 cities worldwide. Since his return to stage Tim starred in the ABC 2018 comedy series "Squinters" and appeared as Friar Tuck in the Hollywood release of Robin Hood. He also starred in "UPRIGHT", the eight-part drama series which he co-wrote with The Chaser’s Chris Taylor, actor-writers Leon Ford and Kate Mulvaney, and co-produced with Lingo Pictures for Foxtel and Sky UK.

Violent Femmes

^^

When: Friday 27th March
Where:

Rumour has it that upon enrolment into Australian university students receive a copy of the Violent Femmes eponymous debut. Ten tracks and 36 minutes long, the album features the universal themes of alienation, isolation, sexual frustration and angst - perfect early adult fodder - via songs such as Gone Daddy Gone, Kiss Off, Add it Up, Please Do Not Go and of course, Blister in the Sun. We don’t know if that rumour is true, of course, but it would go some way in explaining ‘The Femmes’ enduring popularity in our parts. And so we welcome Violent Femmes to Australian shores this coming March for their first national tour since 2017. This time they come with a brand new album - their 10th - Hotel Last Resort, which resides among the band’s finest work, simultaneously refining and redefining their one-of-a-kind take on American music, mingling front porch folk, post punk, spiritual jazz, country blues, avant garde minimalism and golden age rock ‘n’ roll into something still altogether their own.

War And Treaty

^^

When: Thursday 9th April
Where: Factory
Theatre

Referred to as the discovery act from Bluesfest 2019, there was no doubt in our minds but to bring The War and Treaty on tour in 2020 to share their incredible talent with people across Australia! It is hard to believe that this pair have only just come into focus. While their back story is romantic and emotional, they have been paying music dues for a long time. Having both been gifted with incredible voices, the couple also have a natural talent for storytelling through song. Michael Trotter’s back story tells of a shy, poverty-stricken childhood, eventual enlistment in the US Army and being shipped off to serve in the Iraq war in 2003. Trotter was not meant for fighting but had a gift for making music, which he nurtured with an abandoned piano encamped in a Saddam Hussein palace. After the war, Michael pursued a career in music, which led him to meeting Tanya, at a festival in 2010. They fell in love, made music, had a child and began their passionate journey together as The War and Treaty. Having come from a musical theatre background and landing a role in ‘Sister Act 2’ singing a duet with Lauryn Hill in her early career, it is clear from their performance that Tanya is no stranger to the stage. The War and Treaty deliver live shows and records that make the hairs on the back of necks stand up. Their music and stories bring tears, goosebumps, beaming faces, united voices and rejoice! Don’t miss your chance to catch this truly stunning act live.
